Dermalogica Clear Start

Skincare for teenage skin with pimples and impurities

The Clear Start line from Dermalogica is specifically developed for younger skin: teenagers and young adults who are dealing with pimples, blackheads, and a shiny T-zone for the first time. Unlike the Active Clearing line for adult acne, Clear Start focuses on hormonal teenage acne — impurities caused by puberty that typically heal faster, provided the skin receives the right care.

The principle is always the same: effective enough to make a difference, gentle enough not to burden young skin. No harsh drugstore products that damage the skin barrier, no complex routines with ten steps, but thoughtful formulas that keep teenage life simple — from a foaming cleanser to a cooling moisturizer that also works under makeup.

Why choose Dermalogica Clear Start?

Clear Start stands out from other teen products due to milder doses of active ingredients combined with a strong soothing botanical base. No alcohol, no synthetic fragrances, and acid concentrations tailored to skin that is still developing. The products are also more accessible in style and price — great for those who want to build a routine without immediately investing in full prices of professional lines.

Find your ideal Clear Start product

A good routine starts small. For beginners, two or three steps are enough, while advanced users can expand with targeted treatments and special applications.

For beginners: the Breakout Clearing Kit is the most logical start. Three travel-sized products — cleanser, booster, and cooling moisturizer — for a complete routine in one box and at a significant saving compared to buying separately.

Cleanse as a base: the Breakout Clearing Foaming Wash 177ml is the standard size with 0.5% salicylic acid and eight botanicals; for families or frequent users, the value size 295ml is a logical choice.

Toner and prevention: the Micro Pore Mist refines visible pores and provides a refreshing boost throughout the day. Salicylic acid-free, so also suitable alongside prescription acne medication.

Targeted treatments: the Breakout Clearing Booster works overnight on emerging pimples with 2% salicylic acid. The Post-Breakout Fix specifically targets the dark spots left by pimples weeks later — two complementary products rather than overlapping ones.

Special treatments: the Blackhead Clearing Fizz Masque is a bubbling mask with 3% sulfur against stubborn blackheads on the nose and T-zone, to be used two to three times a week.

Hydrate according to skin type: the Cooling Aqua Jelly is a light cooling moisturizer for oily or combination skin; the Skin Soothing Hydrating Lotion is richer and specifically for dry skin affected by acne medication.

Sun protection: the Clearing Defense SPF30 is a mattifying day cream with broad-spectrum protection. For on-the-go and reapplication, the Golden Hour Hydrating SPF30 Stick is a handy addition with a subtle golden glow.

Body: the Clarifying Body Spray targets back, shoulder, and chest acne, with a 360° sprayer that works even upside down.

Introductory kit for sun and glow: the Glow & Go Kit combines various products in convenient sizes — ideal for those seeking a complete routine or as a gift.

How to build a Clear Start routine?

An effective teen routine usually consists of three to five steps. Start small and build up gradually to allow the skin to get used to the active ingredients — two to three weeks of consistent use is usually enough to see initial results.

1. Cleanse morning and evening with the Breakout Clearing Foaming Wash and rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water
2. Refresh with a few sprays of Micro Pore Mist as a toning step after cleansing
3. Treat acute pimples with the Breakout Clearing Booster targeted on problem areas, and the Post-Breakout Fix on dark spots from previous pimples
4. Hydrate with the Cooling Aqua Jelly for oily skin, or the Skin Soothing Hydrating Lotion for dry or medication-affected skin
5. Finish the morning routine with the Clearing Defense SPF30 and take the Golden Hour Stick for reapplication on the go
6. Add the Blackhead Clearing Fizz Masque two to three times a week as a weekly treatment against blackheads

Frequently Asked Questions

From what age is Clear Start suitable for my child?

Most Clear Start products are suitable from about 11 years old, once the first pimples appear. The Blackhead Clearing Fizz Masque with 3% sulfur is recommended from 15 years due to its stronger formula. For children under 10, we advise against the line, even with early pimples — a neutral, mild cleanser is more appropriate then.

What is the difference between Clear Start and Active Clearing from Dermalogica?

Clear Start is developed for teenage acne — hormonal impurities caused by puberty with a quick recovery time. The formulas are milder and primarily focus on clearing and prevention. Active Clearing is for adult acne, where pigmentation spots and skin aging also play a role. The doses of active ingredients are higher and the approach is more complex.

Are Clear Start products suitable alongside prescription medication from the dermatologist?

Many products are, but always discuss your full routine with the dermatologist. Products without salicylic acid such as Micro Pore Mist and Skin Soothing Hydrating Lotion are generally safe alongside prescribed acne medication. Products with higher acid concentrations like the Booster or Fizz Masque require coordination, especially when used simultaneously with retinoids or isotretinoin.

Does salicylic acid make my teenager’s skin sensitive to the sun?

Yes, salicylic acid can make the skin more sensitive to UV radiation. An SPF in the morning routine is therefore essential — use Clearing Defense SPF30 as a day cream, and the Golden Hour SPF30 Stick for reapplication during the day. This also prevents pigmentation spots from darkening after pimples due to sunlight.
