Jane Iredale PurePressed Base Mineral Foundation Refill

Mineral powder foundation with SPF in 26 colors with refill system

Choosing a foundation that offers coverage, concealer, and sun protection without feeling heavy or cakey — for many people, that remains the holy grail of makeup. The Jane Iredale PurePressed Base Mineral Foundation Refill delivers exactly that combination: a mineral powder foundation with SPF, available in no less than 26 shades that cater to warm, cool, and neutral undertones. The micronized mineral pigments sit flat on the skin, breathe with it, and provide a filtered, semi-matte finish.

The refill version is designed to be clicked back into a Jane Iredale Refillable Compact — a conscious choice by the brand for less packaging and lower cost per use. Whether you’re looking for your first mineral foundation, a refill for your trusted shade, or a seasonal switch between two colors, this range offers the full spectrum from Ivory to Cocoa while maintaining the signature formula the brand is known for worldwide.

Why choose Jane Iredale PurePressed Base?

PurePressed Base is Jane Iredale’s best-selling product and is considered a reference for mineral makeup in the skin therapy world. The formula contains physical UV filters (titanium dioxide and zinc oxide), soothing sea minerals, pomegranate extract, and pine bark extract — without talc, fragrance, or bulking ingredients that clog pores. The product is recommended by The Skin Cancer Foundation, dermatologically tested, and suitable for the most sensitive skin, even after aesthetic treatments. Vegan, gluten-free, cruelty-free, and reef-safe — a formula crafted as carefully as a serious skincare product.

The Jane Iredale refill system

A refill is not a loose powder pan that fits into any compact — it is specifically designed for the Jane Iredale Refillable Compact. If you don’t have a compact yet, you choose one once and then use it for years with new refills. The compact is made of durable aluminum with a magnetic closure and a large mirror inside — a practical and stylish possession that also travels well. Available in two colors:

• Jane Iredale Refillable Compact White — sleek white aluminum for those who love minimalist design
• Jane Iredale Refillable Compact Dusty Gold — refined Dusty Gold for a luxurious, classic look

Changing the refill is a matter of a pin in the opening at the bottom — the old refill pops out, the new one clicks in. The same compact frame also fits Jane Iredale PureBronze bronzers and PureMatte Finish Powder, allowing you to use one refillable base for different products.

Find your ideal shade by undertone

The PurePressed Base range is built around three main groups: warm, cool, and neutral undertones. You determine your undertone by looking at your skin in daylight — if you see a yellow or peach glow, your undertone is warm; blue or rosy tones indicate cool; and if you don’t recognize a clear bias, you fall into the neutral category.

Warm undertones — yellow, gold, peach, or reddish brown Suitable for skin that tans golden brown in the sun instead of burning. From light to deep:

• Jane Iredale PurePressed Base Bisque — light shade with soft warm undertones
• Jane Iredale PurePressed Base Warm Silk — light shade with golden-yellow undertones and silky finish
• Jane Iredale PurePressed Base Amber — light-medium with honey-golden warmth
• Jane Iredale PurePressed Base Warm Sienna — light-medium with reddish-brown olive undertones
• Jane Iredale PurePressed Base Golden Glow — medium with gold-peach warmth
• Jane Iredale PurePressed Base Sweet Honey — medium with honey-like golden brown depth

• Jane Iredale PurePressed Base Golden Tan — medium-dark with deep golden warmth

• Jane Iredale PurePressed Base Warm Brown — dark with bright brown warmth (SPF 15)
• Jane Iredale PurePressed Base Bittersweet — deep dark with chocolate brown-red undertones (SPF 15)
• Jane Iredale PurePressed Base Mahogany — dark with mahogany reddish-brown warmth (SPF 15)

Cool undertones — pink, bluish or grayish translucent For skin that burns easily instead of tanning and usually has a rosy or porcelain-like appearance. From light to deep:

• Jane Iredale PurePressed Base Light Beige — light cool-neutral shade
• Jane Iredale PurePressed Base Natural — light-medium cool shade for European skin
• Jane Iredale PurePressed Base Honey Bronze — medium cool shade without yellow tint

• Jane Iredale PurePressed Base Cocoa — deep dark cool shade (SPF 15)

Neutral undertones — no pronounced warm or cool For skin that shows neither a clearly warm nor cool bias. From light to deep:

• Jane Iredale PurePressed Base Ivory — very light neutral shade
• Jane Iredale PurePressed Base Radiant — light-medium with subtle light reflection
• Jane Iredale PurePressed Base Satin — light-medium with silky finish
• Jane Iredale PurePressed Base Riviera — medium with bronzed-neutral appearance

The difference between SPF 20 and SPF 15 in this range

With PurePressed Base, the SPF value varies by color, and this is no accident — it’s a deliberate formula choice by Jane Iredale. The UV protection comes from two mineral filters: titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. Both are naturally white, and the more of them in a formula, the higher the SPF but also the whiter the powder looks when applied.

On light to medium skin, this is no problem — the white filters blend invisibly into lighter pigments. On darker skin, however, a high dose of mineral filters would cause a visible gray cast that disrupts the natural skin tone. That’s why the twenty lightest shades contain 14% titanium dioxide and 3% zinc oxide (SPF 20), while the six deepest shades Cognac, Mahogany, Velvet, Bittersweet, Cocoa, and Warm Brown have a lower concentration and officially provide SPF 15 (or just below). The trade-off: higher SPF with gray cast, or slightly lower SPF while preserving natural skin color. Jane Iredale chooses the latter.

For those needing extended UV protection during prolonged outdoor activity, we recommend applying a separate sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher under every PurePressed Base — regardless of the SPF value

How to use PurePressed Base Refill?

1. Thoroughly cleanse your skin with a gentle cleanser like the Jane Iredale BeautyPrep Face Cleanser as a base for the day
2. Apply a hydrating serum like the BeautyPrep Hyaluronic Serum for optimal skin preparation
3. Finish your skincare routine with the BeautyPrep Face Moisturizer and let it fully absorb
4. Optionally apply a separate SPF 30 or higher for extended UV protection during longer sun exposure
5. Click your chosen PurePressed Base Refill into a Jane Iredale Refillable Compact White or Refillable Compact Dusty Gold — you buy these once and reuse them for years
6. Use The Handi Brush to pick up the powder in light circular motions and tap firmly to avoid waste.
7. Work from the center of the face outward with short sweeping motions, paying extra attention to areas that need more coverage.
8. Finish with a hydration spray to let the mineral pigments 'melt' into the skin and create a skin-like finish.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find the right shade without being able to test the products?

The easiest method is to compare two to three shades side by side on the transition from cheek to jawline in natural daylight. The shade that literally disappears into your skin is the right one. For uncertain cases, Jane Iredale offers a 100% color match guarantee. Start with your undertone (warm, cool, or neutral) and then choose within that group from light to dark.

How long does a 9.9g refill last?

With daily use, one refill lasts on average six to eight months. The mineral powder formula is concentrated, so you need little product per application. In practice, this is much more economical than a liquid foundation in a similar price range.

Do I need a Refillable Compact to use the refill?

Yes, the refill is a loose powder pan without its own compact case. You need a Jane Iredale Refillable Compact — available in White or Dusty Gold — to click the refill into. You buy this once and reuse it for years with new refills, regardless of whether you switch colors in between.

Is a mineral foundation suitable for my sensitive or acne-prone skin?

Yes, that’s exactly what this formula was developed for. No talc, fragrance, bulking agents, or chemical UV filters that can irritate. Many skin therapists recommend Jane Iredale after aesthetic treatments like peels or laser, and for skin with acne, rosacea, or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

Can I mix two shades to get my perfect match?

Absolutely, and this is a commonly used technique within the Jane Iredale system. Many customers use two adjacent shades — a lighter one for winter and a deeper one for summer — or blend during transitional seasons. Keeping two refills side by side makes this easy.
